The Earth functions as a system with multiple feedbacks, environment and development chal­lenges are intricately interlinked, and social and economic sectors interlink with environmental is­sues in various ways.



In the context of rapid changes of our planet Earth, explosive population growth, ac­celerating industrialization, especially in the emerging countries, increasing exploitation of re­sources, serious natural hazards, recent natural disasters, and, importantly, the growing num­ber of com­plex systems interacting with their environments, the

addresses the ever more significant problem of scientifically and technologically exploring and monitoring environments to provide scientists with deeper insights and better understanding of the “Sys­tem Earth” and to provide politicians and decision makers with more sophisticated informa­tion.
