For the fifth time DFG SFB-TRR 161 “Quantitative Methods for Visual Computing” hosted the Women in Computing workshop. This time the ZESS hosted DFG FOR 5336 “Learning to Sense” joined in as a partner in organising this half-day workshop. Four talks and a general discussion focused on how to find balance – balance between work and life, (mental) health, and juggling multiple obligations. Four successful researchers from industry and academia took the stage to share their perspectives and unique insights into their careers and research domains.

  • Prof Neha Kumar (Georgia Tech, USA, SIGCHI President): On Balance, Community, and Care
  • Prof Giulia Barbareschi (University of Duisburg-Essen): The wisdom I did (not) learn about managing my life in academia
  • Carla De Angelis (Ecolab Vienna): Finding Your Balance: Evolving Priorities in Work, Life, and Motherhood
  • Ghada Helal (Dematic GmbH): Coding a Home: Finding Equilibrium in the 50/50 Luck Algorithm

With this event, we aim to foster mentorship in career development for young (female) researchers by establishing and strengthening a network of Women* in Computing. This was an event about, from and with women in computing, but by no means exclusively “for” them.

A big thanks to Dr Passant Elagroudy (Kaiserslautern), Dr Marina Evers (Siegen), Ten.-tr. Prof Tiare Feuchtner (Konstanz), Dr Anke Reinschlüssel (Konstanz) for organising and to Prof Tanja Döring (Berlin) for hosting this wonderful event!
